What is criminology used for in law?

Criminology is the discipline that is dedicated to the study of a crime, its causes and its consequences. This discipline is important in the field of law since it provides vital and relevant information for the judicial system.

Criminology in law at a professional level

Criminology is a branch of science that is directly and naturally related to the area of law.

When talking about criminology we can say that it is a discipline of law that is responsible for studying a crime in depth, as well as the application of crime prevention techniques, the study of victims or psychological disorders.

A criminologist as such will carry out his job by providing technical advice to judges and prosecutors, in addition to being able to act to care for victims. Therefore, the relationship with the law is real and close, specifically with the criminal branch.

Both criminal law and criminology are disciplines aimed at the study of crime and criminal investigation, so they are two eminently practical areas from both a social and individual point of view.

Criminal Law pursues the positive law of crime and its legislative study; criminology, for its part, completes this study with the analysis of the personality of the victim/s and offender/s.
